Shadetree Collective

For over 40 years, Shadetree has been a cultural landmark in Oakland, offering affordable living in a vibrant, communal setting. Home to a diverse mix of artists, carpenters, and activists, Shadetree's spirit of collective innovation has shaped its history.

In 2005, new owners took over, and by 2016, faced with eviction, Shadetree's 18 residents formed the nonprofit SHADE (Shadetree Historical Artisan Development Engine). Led by housing advocate Donna Smithey, they raised funds to buy the property and preserve it from demolition. This effort highlighted Shadetree's role in the affordable housing movement, especially after the Ghost Ship tragedy.

SHADE approached BACLT in 2021 to cosponsor a loan from the City of oakland and donated their land to become aBACLT member.  The funds they received from the City has allowed them to do substantial renovation to their buildings.

Today, Shadetree houses 30 residents across three generations, including artists, musicians, and social workers. Their story was featured on KQED and NPR in 2018, and they received an Oakland Heritage Alliance award the same year.
